World Wetlands Day 2023

Thursday February 2

Happy World Wetlands Day!

World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2 February to raise awareness about wetlands. This day also marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971. Wetlands are critical ecosystems which provide numerous functions, benefits, and services. However, globally, they are in decline due to rising anthropogenic pressures. Canada is home to approximately 25% of the world’s wetlands and therefore, plays a large role in the conservation of these ecosystems.

Wetland Restoration the theme for 2023 highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration.
